Current Events

I figured I’d use the news feature on this site to tell everyone that I got the Ohio U English department’s nomination for a university-wide fellowship for next year. The fellowship is for a graduate student in any department to receive free tuition and a stipend without having to work (in my case, as a teacher). That’d let me focus my time and energy on writing this book that I’m researching now and trying to sell. It’s no guarantee, but I’ve got the department nod (each department can only nominate one student).

In other news, Steve Stewart found out that he didn’t get a job at BYU, but I still haven’t heard anything. John Bennion told me I was still in the running. Even if I were to get the job, I don’t know that I’d take it right now. Don’t tell them that yet. I’m disappointed that Steve didn’t get a job there. He’s excellent. I don’t know what they were thinking.

And on Monday I’ll finally meet up with Eduardo Galeano. I’ve talked to him a couple of times on the phone, but since I was going to be here for a long time, neither he nor I rushed it, and now it’s already 5 months into my fellowship. But anyway, I’ll get to see him and ask him for his writing wisdom. And maybe invite him to a reading that I’m giving at the Fulbright commission on March 27.

That’s the extent of my own news. I’ll try to get Karina and the kids to write something soon.

My current vote for coolest name is:
  1. Olympic boredom
Maybe what we need is an infusion of new events to pique our interest.
