A Word about Spam

Anyone who has a Hotmail or Yahoo account knows and hates spam. The best way to avoid spam is never to give out your email address to anybody you don’t absolutely trust. Also, have a junk account (on Hotmail or Yahoo) that you can use when you have to sign up for some internet service.

On this site, our email addresses only appear in our comments (as links from our names, if we don’t enter a URL). Even then, Movable Type apparently scrambles what a malicious Spam-Bot or Spider would see when it comes harvesting email addresses to add to spam lists. I’m not sure how it works, but it’s supposed to work.

Anyway, as a precaution, please don’t list email addresses anywhere out in the open. Inevitably, you will be found by the evil spam lords and their minions. One thing I’ve seen people do on sites is list their email just like “pat (at) losmadden (dot) com” and trust that people will be intelligent enough to figure that out. Sounds good.

Finally, about maddenation email addresses: I haven’t set them up yet, and I’m thinking about how to do it. Basically, I don’t want any responsibility for other people’s email. So I’m thinking that I could set them up, but you’d have to have the address forwarded somewhere else. If you were to read email off the server it comes into, it would eat into our total file space (which is precious and would cost more money if we went over our allotment). You’d also have to swear by the moon or the hair on your head that you will never let your address fall into the wrong hands. If you have friends who send those too-good-to-be-true multi-forwarded emails, you can’t let them know your address. If you subscribe to internet things, you can’t give it out. Yahoo can afford the server space to hold all your spam, but we can’t.

Anyway, more on this later. Let’s discuss it.
