Guster
Dad and I went to a Guster show the other day in Morristown. This might be the first concert I’ve been to with Dad since my first concert - The Stray Cats (at Milwaukee Summerfest). I loved the show, and I think it’s safe to say Dad enjoyed it too. Guster is a rockin band or 3 or 4 or 5 guys (depending on the song and the set and the roadies I guess) that started with just 2 guys in Massachusetts - one guitar player, one bongo player. They continue to rock on as they did in the parking lot behind Scotti’s Records, near the Green, Morristown.
I’m proud of Dad for going with me. He was close to the oldest person there (he says he saw at least one older fellow) - most of the audience was high school, college, low twenties. Even I was a little old. [This is quite the opposite feeling I got yesterday when Mom, Dad, and I saw ‘Capturing the Friedmans’ - where the three of us were the only ones below 65]. Anyway, just thought I’d tell y’all about it. Guster’s got great groovy tunes. They’re a very regular bunch of guys. Most exciting was the bongo player. MAN, that guy could play like nothing else I’ve ever seen - phenomenal! It’s too bad their studio recordings don’t highlight his talents like the live show.

In related news, today Karina and I took the kids to a concert by Ruben Rada, a multi-genre Uruguayan musician who has done a few kids’ albums. They’re great, and so was the show. We had a great time, especially when they released huge beach balls to bounce around during the encore.
