Last Name Commonality

I actually read, for once, one of those unsolicited emails that Netscape sends me, and I found a link to an interesting PBS feature that tells you how common your last name is in the US (according to the census). I was interested, because not too far back I was thinking, or maybe even writing here, about how Madden is not a super common last name, but it’s common enough that you’ve heard it (if you’re not us, I mean), even if you don’t like football. So, what are your guesses for Madden and Stone? How about Cabrera? Which name do you think is more popular in the US? You can check the site (for literally minutes of enjoyment!) or just read more for the answers.

Madden is name # 847 in the US. Stone is # 145. Both are more popular than I would have thought. Cabrera is # 725. Of course, number ranking does not directly correlate to actual numbers of people with the last name. Smith, at #1, may outnumber 2-5. Who knows?

Interesting.

And get this, just last night some dude at this ACE mass i went to was talking to me. He said something like, (after saying my name was “Dave Madden”) “hey man, do people mistake you for the football guy a lot? and you could go on David Letterman and be one of those people who have a famous name and all that.” at that point i was confused and people around us started to giggle. then somebody said that it’s “JOHN” Madden who’s famous, not “DAVE”. the point of my story is that this guy was weird, and that i found $20.

also, in dallas tx when dealing with the american airlines folks, trying to get my frequent flyer miles added on and whatnot, i gave the lady my name and zip code. turns out, there are 3 other David Madden’s in my zip code. and two of them are less than a block away from me. I’ll kill em. right now. man that makes me mad. Stop trying to steal my name, suckers. that’s what i’ll tell them. the point of this story is that I wasn’t even one of the David Madden’s in the 60614 zip, aa still had me living in Florida, coincidentally, where I once found $20.

Isn’t there a Dave Madden who starred in the Brady Bunch or something?

He was on The Partridge Family(I) as Ruben Kincaid, the band’s manager. There’s also a movie producer named David Madden.

By the way, Smith is, as expected, number 1, but Jones is number 4. Brown is number 5. I can’t figure out what numbers 2 and 3 are. Can you (without googling)? Update: I just figured out numbers 2 and 3, but I won’t ruin the surprise for you.

I just got 2 and 3 with my 1st and third guesses! Yay!
