Pat and I were in the NJ kitchen one day cooking breakfast (toast) and we wondered aloud, “how the HECK does the toaster know when the bread is done?” Even when it’s too light and you put it down for another minute, it pops right back up. What the heck? How does it KNOW?

Well, per usual, dad was there to give his “answer”. He explained that there was some sort of thingie in there that measures the temperature and trips something when the desired temperature is achieved. Or something. We didn’t understand him, probably because he was making it up and hoping we didn’t notice.

Anyway, dad was actually right (he went into more detail than the writer and designer were interested in). You can know how toasters work too, here.
