Anomy (or anomie)

According to and the American Heritage Dictionary:

1. Social instability caused by erosion of standards and values.

2. Alienation and purposelessness experienced by a person or a class as a result of a lack of standards, values, or ideals.

I know we haven’t had a “Words” category yet, but when I came across this word (it’s in the title of one of Wole Soyinka’s books (he’s a Nigerian writer who won the 1986 Nobel Prize for Literature)) I thought I just had to share it. What a great word. I didn’t consciously know it, but I wanted there to be a word like this.

I didn’t know it, but I wanted this category. I’m excited about it.
