Stupid Grandstanding Jerk
DeSean Jackson was the apparent star of today’s All-American Bowl, a high school all-star game pitting the East against the West. I watched part of it, mostly to see if any of the good players were going to ND (They weren’t). I did see Jackson, playing for the West team, receive a pass in the open and sprint untouched toward the end zone for what should have been an easy score. At the 10 yard line he started his celebration; at the five yard line he started his dive, at about the three yard line as he soared through the air, it became obvious that he had miscalculated his jump and was going to flip head over heels and fall short of the end zone. He put his hands and the ball down to break his fall and fumbled on the 1/2 yard line. Although one ref called it a touchdown, it was ruled down on the 1. Jackson was then penalized for excessive celebration, so the West team got the ball on the 16 yard line.
What an idiot! If I were coaching, I’d have sat him down the rest of the game. Of course that didn’t happen. After all, these are the premier players in the country and scouts, coaches, and fans everywhere were watching to see how the best would shine. Jackson went on to have a great game, but I soon turned the game off in disgust. The last straw was watching two punt receivers (I believe also from the West team) fight over the ball, drop it, and have it recovered by the punting team. I guess they were both hungry for the ball, naturally enough, so they could show their moves to the nation. Bench these jerks. I wouldn’t want them on my team.
If putting up with these types is what it takes to succeed in todays semi-pro college world, then I’ve had it. Notre Dame may as well just drop football or join the Ivy League (if they could get in). I’m already jaded on pro sports. I don’t want tickets and I have better things to do than watch them on the tube. What have we become? A nation of couch potatoes that idolizes steroid-laced gladiators and hires a mercenary army to overthrow offending foreign governments. How appropriate that the US Army sponsored the All-American Bowl.
