Cheney’s Auschwitz Attire

I got this link from the Netscape news page that is my browser’s start page. You may have heard about/seen this by now: Dick Cheney wearing an olive green parka, knit ski cap, and hiking boots at the ceremony commemorating the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Other world leaders were dressed in dark formal overcoats and dress shoes.

I’m normally not one for formal dress, but in this instance, it seems like more than a faux pas. It seems downright disrespectful. Maybe we all need to lighten up and dress practically, not traditionally, but until we do, we gotta go with expectation and tradition. Man, this guy is representing our country at a solemn event remembering 1.5 million dead (at Auschwitz, and, by proxy, over 6 million). Wear black, you idiot! And why didn’t the president go? Now we know. He was planning to wear a purple ski jacket with a yellow six-pointed star over the breast.

We, and the world, have worse things to worry about than how our VP dresses. Nonetheless, Cheney’s informal attire does suggest inattention to social norms at least, and callous indifference to the solemnity of the occasion. Of course, Cheney doesn’t have to worry about his next campaign.
