Carrick-a-Rede

On the northern tip of Northern Ireland is a place called Carrick-a-Rede which has a rope bridge across a deep gap over the sea to an island that used to be used by fishermen. It’s a bit scary, so mom didn’t come. I gave her the car keys and my wallet (at the suggestion of Billy, the guide) and said good bye. When I asked for a goodbye kiss, Billy came over, saying that’s the best offer he’d had all day. I crossed over the wobbly bridge to the island and was transfixed (well not really, but thought it needed a big word) by the nesting birds (gulls mostly) on the cliff walls. I tried to snap photos as they hovered motionless in the wind before landing, but not sure any will come out well. The walk to and from the island was hilly and scenic. What a great coastline.

Down the road from Carrick-a-Rede was the so-called Giants Causway, with the odd hexagonal rods that formed naturally from volcanic lave flows (or something). Again, great views, hilly walk (mom did part of both walks) and enjoyable talks with other tourists. I feel my wind coming back with the cold winds from the Atlantic.

hey - i should get more credit than that. dad did not tell you how steep or long these walks were - quie long and steep if i do say so myself. i am actually doing pretty good for me - and it’s geting better. especially since david really bugged me to walk more and dad has continued. now all i have to do is keep it up when we get home. i figure i can use the tredmill as it will be too hot outside.
love

Wow. Sounds wonderful. I found a National Trust webpage on the place. There are lots of others (just search Google). When you get back we can attach a photograph from your trip to this entry. Mom: don’t worry, we still think you’re great even if you didn’t cross the bridge.

By the way, if you read this comment before you return from Ireland, please bring some Irish coins for Karina. She likes to collect coins from different countries. Thanks. Have a safe trip!

I hope you had fun in Ireland.
