The Earth Institute

I attended this conference at Columbia this week, and was quite energized by it. It was free and included breakfast and lunch. I will have more to say later, as I digest my own notes and review the literature. However, the main “take home” message was that our current patterns of resource utilization are unsustainable. A recurring theme was that global warming is upon us, was caused by the burning of fossil fuels, and can be mitigated to at least some extent if we take massive action now.

The latest issue of Time contains a special report on global warming (climate change) that you may be interested in reading. I’m not fully convinced that human development has caused the problem or that we can really expect to reverse it by reducing CO2 emissions, but I am convinced that the USA wastes far to much of the Earth’s resources and needs to dramatically reduce its consumption for its own good and that of the world.
