Unhappy Meals

This article - Unhappy Meals by Michael Pollan is excellent. It is basically my nutrition/eating philosophy (as I have read lots of this guys stuff, and heard him talk, and I agree with him basically 100%). I think you’ll like it and it has lots of important things to say. Dan and AJ will also no doubt agree with Pollan. He looks at the importance of eating food - whole foods, that is. He also takes a close look at the changes that have lead to the rise of the Western diet (something we’ve talked about numerous times) and what he terms ‘nutritionism’. Take some time to read up on it (it’s a long essay). Then let’s talk about it and comment on it.

Two quotes I like:

“Perhaps what we need now is a broader, less reductive view of what food is, one that is at once more ecological and cultural. What would happen, for example, if we were to start thinking about food as less of a thing and more of a relationship?”

“Yet even the simplest food is a hopelessly complex thing to study, a virtual wilderness of chemical compounds, many of which exist in complex and dynamic relation to one another, and all of which together are in the process of changing from one state to another. So if you’re a nutritional scientist, you do the only thing you can do, given the tools at your disposal: break the thing down into its component parts and study those one by one, even if that means ignoring complex interactions and contexts, as well as the fact that the whole may be more than, or just different from, the sum of its parts. This is what we mean by reductionist science.”

Anybody interested in getting an Earthbox? I’ve thought about it a few times. Perhaps a few of us could each get one and then see how our growing/farming goes?
