Cudding edge research

A recent AP article from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences tells us cows like to align themselves in the north-south direction. Well land sakes alive, as I live and breath, have you ever heard anything so outlandish?

Well, actually, it’s two-thirds of the cows who sense “north.” They never tell you how they define north, but one would have to assume they mean between northeast and northwest (either end of the cow can be “facing” north). So half the cows would be oriented that way just by random chance. Scientists find an additional 15% of the cows looking north or south and it’s apparently big news. But possibly the most inane comment in the article (and my personal favorite) is the revelation that cows “have been known to seek out the sun on cold days.” Uncanny!
