Earthquakes
Have you ever experienced an earthquake? Probably not, since most of you don’t live in California. Well, Dan and I are experiencing our fair share of them during the past year. The most recent one? About 45 minutes ago.
The earthquakes I have felt before have been rather benign and unimpressive. During most of them, I hoped that they would last longer and move more things around. Then, last summer, the old, creaky house I lived in rolled beneath my feel for a good 20 to 30 seconds as I wondered if the tv on top of my armoire would fall to the floor. Or worse, on my head. After it ended I realized that it was actually a sort of fun earthquake.
Tonight’s earthquake, however, was not fun. I was lying in bed, just as I am now, when the entire room started shaking. VIOLENTLY. I watched my glass frames rattle on the wall, I heard my glass night stand rattle beneath my lamp. I felt my heart and my head pound. I started to get up to run out to my roommate and felt sorta, well, panicked.
You see, the thing about an earthquake is you never know how long it’s going to last. And your brain doesn’t quite get the, “It’s going to be okay, it’s only an earthquake” message until it’s way too late. In fact, I don’t know why your brain would tell you that because earthquake can be destructive and deadly. It might not be okay. I suppose the momentary freak out is at least somewhat warranted. And based on the number of facebook status updates (headed off by Danny Kinda, of course), I am not alone.
So, in conclusion, I must say that I will not soon forget tonight’s shakedown. However, I would add that as long as everyone and everything is all right, it was gnarly and awesome to just experience it. With some guarantees from God that all earthquakes will be cool like that, I will welcome them. But since that won’t happen, I’ll just hope to not have another one for a good while. LIke till after I move back home.
