Actually, this Quentin Tarantino film is about a fictional band of Jewish American soldiers under the direction of Brad Pitt who spend the war honing their reputation as Nazi killers. It’s worth seeing, if nothing else, just to witness Pitt’s incalculably bad portrayal of a southern lieutenant with Native American blood who likes to scalp his prey. Tarantino adds his usual genius for compelling conversations and outrageous situations that grip you and make you wince and cringe. He even manages to insert a cute yet grisly allusion to Cinderella into the action.
Tarantino shows us once again that movies can be about anything as long as they involve interesting people interacting in intriguing ways. Quentin is a genius, evil genius if you wish, who surprises and amuses us with his devilishly clever plots and fiendishly smart people with no moral standards. Warning: there is violence, well beyond anything that might be considered “necessary” or “in keeping with the plot.” And the movie makes no ultimate sense, even as an alternative to well known history. It is no more than a roller coaster ride for your brain; leaving you a little disoriented and shaken, but mostly no worse for the wear.
