Doing everything we can

Another attempt to blow up a plane over US airspace was foiled on Christmas day by our forces of last resort, the passengers on the plane. Its rather obvious from the details of the event that they were lucky. Had this deranged individual been able to detonate the explosive (instead of merely set a fire with it) it might well have brought the plane down.

As usual, government officials have immediately come to the fore to announce that they are “doing all they can” to keep Americans safe. I’m getting tired of this phrase. Obviously, they are not doing all they can do, nor would that be advisable. Air traffic has not been shut down. Strip searches of every passenger are not being conducted. Nigerian natives have not (to my knowledge) been banned from travel to the US. In fact, aside from somewhat longer lines at security check points (which I just experienced on our return trip from LAX) I’m not aware that anything has been done to substantially change screening procedures. Maybe this will come, if we can get beyond the nudity issues relating to “naked” scanners.

The most positive news about the most recent terrorist attack is that, once again, the passengers wouldn’t stand for it. Let that be a lesson to potential Al Qaeda bombers. (No, we’re not happy to see you, we just suspect you’ve strapped explosives to your crotch.)
